Honoring the History of 5th SFG(A)
The 5th Special Forces Group was officially activated on September 21, 1961. Elements of the Group began serving in Vietnam within a year, with the entire Group deployed by 1965.
Operating from Nha Trang, 5th Group detachments established and operated camps throughout South Vietnam, trained and led indigenous forces, and conducted unconventional warfare, reconnaissance, and direct-action missions. The Group earned 14 Vietnam campaign streamers, and 18 of its soldiers received the Medal of Honor for their actions during the conflict.
That history remains an inseparable part of The Legion’s identity. The Vietnam-inspired stripes on this coin recognize the men who built that legacy and those who continue to carry it forward.
